Sun and Moon Conjoined at 22°44' Gemini
Posted June 8th
Every month the Sun and Moon meet and mark the beginning of a brand new lunar cycle. On the New Moon, we embark on a fresh round of growth, both outward (Sun) and inward (Moon), flavored by the sign in which the conjunction falls, and further influenced through links from other planets to the New Moon degree.
In a few days, a New Moon will fall in versatile, cordial Gemini; and so we'll trade in the slow, deliberate, earthy-sensual vibe of Taurus, the lunar month just passing, for the breezy, quicksilver razzamatazz of nimble Gemini, sign of the twins. And speaking of twins, look at the interesting synchrony in the New Moon degree, a double-twin number of 22° 44' Gemini.
With Mercury-ruled Gemini ruling the collective lunar mood, we may find ourselves craving social contact and intellectual stimulation much more. Willing to leave our cozy little Taurean clover patch, we are up for new adventures of a decidedly "cerebral" variety. With a fun-loving knack for wordplay and other kinds of tricky verbal gymnastics, Gemini prefers light-hearted exchanges with cheerful sorts, ideally conversant on a number of topics. Whoever said, "Variety is the spice of life," must have had Gemini and/or Mercury prominent in the natal chart.

"There are some people who live in a dream world, and some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other."
— Douglas Everett
Already at a slow crawl approaching station retrograde on June 18th, Neptune links up with the New Moon through a compelling, siren-like square. Connecting rational Gemini with dreamy Neptune in Pisces, the square is somewhat wide, but still a predominant influence, given Neptune is particularly potent right now nearing its station. Denoting challenge and cross-purpose in need of integration, a square, on the positive side, can release tremendous, pent up energy and dynamism when the two ends find a way to collaborate. And therein lies the trick.
The two signs involved in a square are important clues as to the special nature of the challenge. Gemini is concerned with relevant information, essentials: facts, ideas, and knowledge; whereas Jupiter- and Neptune-ruled Pisces' natural affinity is with quintessentials: the big ideas and ideals rather than specific concepts or details. Pisces is not always as concerned with facts perhaps as she should be, but more interested in "relative values and inner experience," as Sue Tompkins, in her book on astrological aspects, describes the Piscean mindset, set on more transcendant truth. Thompkins adds that the square from Gemini to Pisces suggests "a struggle between the objective reality and the subjective inner reality" of our own experiences, sensations and feelings. Are you more on the Gemini or Pisces end of the spectrum? What do you need to do to integrate these two, different but equally important cognitive/intuitive strengths?
The special magic of this particular square, its silver lining, is in this bridging of the two, coaxing them work more cooperatively, what many artists strive for everyday in their work. Therefore, artists, poets, and musicians will be special guides over this next lunar cycle. American artist Georgia O'Keefe — whose work I've featured in this article, who had natal Mercury opposite Neptune, thematically similar to a Gemini-Pisces square — describes this process of channeling the Muse, bringing outer reality and inner experience into alignment, attempting to somehow express the ineffable through her art:
"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way... things I had no words for."

"Nobody sees a flower — really — it is so small it takes time — we haven't time — and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time."
— Georgia O'Keeffe
Whether we are professional artists or don't even engage in an occasional, absentminded doodle, the square from Gemini to Pisces, New Moon to Neptune, suggests we are meant to open our minds over this next lunar month, try to integrate a wider range of the spectrum: bridging imagination and intellect, heart and mind, the intuitive and the rational, the heavenly and mundane.
Mars Retrograde Cycle Coming Soon!
As I wrote about in the previous post, Sailing into the Doldrums, Mars is nearing its station retrograde and you are probably feeling the subsequent drop in energy. Over the next two months as Mars glides backwards, less energy will be at our disposal. Allow yourself to take more naps, rest more often in general, and lessen demands as much as possible. This is not the summer to conquer the world! More so, time to tidy up the inner kingdom. Here are the significant dates again. I'll be posting more on this key cycle very soon.
- June 26th - Station retrograde at 9°13' Aquarius
- July 27th - Sun opposition Mars at 4°08' Leo/Aquarius
- July 27th - Total Lunar Eclipse at 4°45' Aquarius
- Aug 13th - Mars retrogrades back into Capricorn
- Aug 27th - Station direct at 28°36' Capricorn
- Sept 10th - Mars reenters Aquarius
- Sept 27th - Sun trine Mars at 4°48' Libra/Aquarius
- Oct 5th - Venus stations retrograde at 10°50' Scorpio
- Oct 8th - Mars leaves retrograde zone
As you see, adding to the fun, just before the Mars cycle is complete in early October, Venus stations retrograde. More on that when the time comes....
