Where Heaven and Earth Meet

Venus at 29°59' Pisces

painting Our current Venus retrograde contemplation project — re-evaluating all matters of the heart — will be shifting gears very soon.

Nearing that power point, most cardinal of cardinal degrees, Zero Aries, the genesis point of the zodiac wheel, Venus will float over this "alpha" degree to the "omega" — 29° Pisces — in 36 hours. The retrograde cycle will not only shift signs, but flow backwards over the zodiac's starting point to its end, while ushering in a distinctly different Neptune- and Pisces-flavored final journey.

Exiting through the back door, Venus leaves this fiery, yang sign with objectives and impulses very much at odds with our demure, receptive Goddess of Love, who'd rather avoid such brash and impatient (to her, ill-mannered) "Mars-y" methods. No, Venus's strength lies not in direct action but attraction: drawing what she desires through a passive, but no less powerful, magnetic process. In this post-feminist world of ours, we tend to think of this kind of behavior as wrong or manipulative, but it isn't always. In some situations it can be the wiser, more effective approach.

While in dynamic, active Aries, Venus retrograde has offered insights into all the ways we neglect our own individual needs and desires, For the rest of the retrograde, we have a special opportunity to learn how to open our hearts more fully, connect with a larger, more compassionate aspect of ourselves. where we need to push back when others step over the line, where the balance is off regarding compromise and concern for others vs the freedom to pursue our own objectives: expressing the individual will (ideally) without alienating everyone in our life.

In sensitive, intuitive Pisces, Venus will offer very different revelations into areas of life we often neglect: communing with the inner Muse and higher guidance, becoming better acquainted with our deeper, spiritual nature, connecting with the eternal.

SO VENUS WILL LEAVE FIRE FOR WATER, yang for yin, cardinal for mutable, diving into Neptune's own sign, where she is strong. Indeed magnetic Venus is very much at home in the feminine, receptive water element — especially Pisces, sign of her exaltation. Aphrodite herself after all rose out of the ocean's foam, her myth reflecting a deeper truth, for love does indeed rise, is born from, Neptune's sea of sensitivity and compassion. For the rest of the retrograde, until the station direct in two weeks (April 15th), we have a special opportunity to learn how to open our hearts more fully, connect with a larger, more compassionate aspect of ourselves, bring in more spiritual inspiration and joy into our lives and the lives of those we love.

The Sabian Symbol* for the "alpha" degree on which Venus is perched as we "speak" is particularly beautiful and relevant: A Woman Just Risen from the Sea. A Seal Embracing Her.

ADDING TO THE POWER of this last portion of the retrograde, just four days before Venus stations direct, a Full Moon will fall in Libra, which Venus, nearing stationary direct in Pisces, will rule. The Full Moon marks a time of revelation, with special insights arising not only from the sign involved but its ruler. So this sensitive placement of Venus will be a particularly potent guide for us in the days leading up to and following this "Full-Moon finish" to the entire retrograde cycle. Moreover, the Libra Full Moon is especially powerful in another way, as it will conjoin Jupiter, oppose Uranus and square Pluto, thus setting off this major alignment for the year.

And two days before this awesome Full Moon, Mercury will station retrograde in Venus-ruled Taurus, adding to the already strong Venus retrograde "contemplation-and-review" emphasis, which should be especially evident from Mercury's station on April 9th through Venus direct on April 15th. Pay special attention to what pops up in your life, to the insights streaming in, over these six days in particular.

Go Native

To get in tune with, gather inspiration for this especially significant last leg of the retrograde, let's hang out with some of the natives — consider the insights from some particularly deep, Venus-in-Pisces individuals, who in various ways exemplify the archetypal strengths of this planet-sign combination. For example the following group of impressive souls were born while Venus was gliding through Pisces' Sea of Love: Martin Luther King, Vincent Van Gogh, George Harrison, Edgar Cayce, Victor Hugo, Johann Sebastian Bach, Frédéric Chopin, Maya Angelou, Marvin Gaye, Saint Teresa of Ávila, Anton Chekhov, Keith Haring, Ram Dass, Harper Lee, Edith Wharton, Langston Hughes, and last but not least, my personal favorite, John Muir.

Let's hear what they have to say....

"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe."

"When one is alone at night in the depths of these woods, the stillness is at once awful and sublime. Every leaf seems to speak."

"I am losing precious days. I am degenerating into a machine for making money. I am learning nothing in this trivial world of men. I must break away and get out into the mountains to learn the news"

"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life."

"Everything is flowing — going somewhere, animals and so-called lifeless rocks as well as water. Thus the snow flows fast or slow in grand beauty-making glaciers and avalanches; the air in majestic floods carrying minerals, plant leaves, seeds, spores, with streams of music and fragrance; water streams carrying rocks... While the stars go streaming through space pulsed on and on forever like blood...in Nature's warm heart."

"The snow is melting into music."

— John Muir

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."

"Now there is a final reason I think that Jesus says, "Love your enemies." It is this: that love has within it a redemptive power. And there is a power there that eventually transforms individuals. Just keep being friendly to that person. Just keep loving them, and they can't stand it too long. Oh, they react in many ways in the beginning. They react with guilt feelings, and sometimes they'll hate you a little more at that transition period, but just keep loving them. And by the power of your love they will break down under the load. That's love, you see. It is redemptive, and this is why Jesus says love. There's something about love that builds up and is creative. There is something about hate that tears down and is destructive."

— Martin Luther King

"What Is Love? I have met in the streets a very poor young man who was in love. His hat was old, his coat worn, the water passed through his shoes and the stars through his soul."

— Victor Hugo

"Great numbers of children will be born who understand electronics and atomic power as well as other forms of energy. They will grow into scientists and engineers of a new age which has the power to destroy civilization unless we learn to live by spiritual laws."

— Edgar Cayce, Venus in Pisces

"I don't know anything with certainty, but seeing the stars makes me dream."

"Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all."

"At present I absolutely want to paint a starry sky. It often seems to me that night is still more richly coloured than the day; having hues of the most intense violets, blues and greens. If only you pay attention to it you will see that certain stars are lemon-yellow, others pink or a green, blue and forget-me-not brilliance. And without my expatiating on this theme it is obvious that putting little white dots on the blue-black is not enough to paint a starry sky."

— Vincent Van Gogh

*Sabian Symbols are brief evocative descriptions developed for each degree of the Zodiac. Sometimes cryptic, the symbols are little meditations that can, upon contemplation, sometimes open up new insights. It is fun and often illuminating in a "right-brain" kind of way to look up the symbols for current transits and for the planetary positions and chart angles of your birth chart. Created in 1925 by astrologer Marc Edmund Jones in collaboration with the psychic Elsie Wheeler, they are used as a kind of astrological I-Ching. The citation above is from Dane Rudhyar's book on the Sabian symbols, An Astrological Mandala. New York: Vintage, 1973.

The lovely painting of the woman, who, true to her Venus nature, is taking the time to smell the roses, was painted by the sublime John William Waterhouse, and is titled: "My Sweet Rose."
